Education

Harare educates in two currencies and communicates on one app. The administrative load — fees, notices, admissions enquiries, timetables — is where hours go, and where automation is safe.

What is specific to Harare

The institutions. Six universities sit in the city: the University of Zimbabwe (1952) in Mount Pleasant, whose Innovation Hub has graduated 21 innovator start-ups since 2019; the Harare Institute of Technology in Belvedere (degrees since 2005; Computer Science and Software Engineering B.Techs); Arrupe Jesuit University; Catholic University of Zimbabwe; Zimbabwe Open University (distance learning); and Women's University in Africa. Private schools cluster in Borrowdale, Mount Pleasant and Avondale (Avondale Primary, Twin Rivers, Blakiston, Littlerock International, Hillbright Science College).

Fees in two currencies. Fee schedules are quoted in USD with a ZiG equivalent at a stated rate; the RBZ plans a ZiG-only economy by 2030 but the multicurrency regime remains legal. Every reminder carries a rate date.

Parents are on WhatsApp, students on prepaid data. Mobile data subscriptions average ≈3.8 GB a month (POTRAZ Q2 2025). A 20 MB newsletter PDF is a real cost to a family; a 200-word message is not.
