Retail and wholesale in Harare
The chains are closing outlets, the tuckshops are winning, the wholesalers are fiscalising and the biggest market in the country still runs on voice notes. Automation here is about the channel and the invoice, not the till.
What is specific to Harare
The chains are in retreat. OK Zimbabwe, Spar and Choppies have closed or scaled down outlets in Chitungwiza, Kuwadzana, Glen Norah and central Harare; Choppies announced its exit in November 2024. The Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers blames informal shops that price in USD and sit outside tax, licensing and labour compliance, together with exchange-rate distortions between the official and parallel ZiG rates (about 26:1 versus 38:1 in February 2025). USD is over 80% of informal-economy transactions.
The market is Mbare Musika. Zimbabwe's largest farm-produce market, fed daily by trucks from Mutare, Masvingo and Kariba, next to the country's busiest intercity bus terminus. Prices move by the hour and are negotiated on the phone.
The wholesalers are fiscalised. Since 31 May 2025 every VAT-registered operator's fiscal device must transmit buyer name, address, TIN and VAT number to ZIMRA's FDMS; only QR-coded fiscal invoices are accepted for input-tax claims. A Graniteside distributor's customers now demand a compliant invoice before they pay.

What fits
| Business | Pattern | Harare constraint it must respect |
|---|---|---|
| Produce wholesaler / market agent | WhatsApp order desk: daily price and stock broadcast; orders captured from text and voice notes into a sheet. | Informal, cash, USD; stall connectivity is mobile-only, so nothing may depend on a browser. |
| FMCG distributor (Graniteside, Msasa) | Fiscalised quote-to-invoice: quote on WhatsApp, capture buyer TIN, invoice through the fiscal device, chase payment. | FDMS buyer-detail transmission; dual-currency price lists with a rate date on every quote. |
| Tuckshop / small grocer | Supplier reorder reminders; mobile-money reconciliation from statements. | Mostly outside fiscalisation; margins do not support paid software — free tiers only. |
| Mall retailer (Borrowdale) | WhatsApp catalogue and reservation; loyalty messages. | USD pricing expected; POS integration varies by tenant. |
| Supermarket branch | Exception alerts (out-of-stock, shrink) and rostering around outage windows. | Budgets squeezed by informal competition; prefer alerts over dashboards. |
Check before you build
- Are you VAT-registered? If yes, the invoice step is a fiscal-device step. Ask your device supplier whether it exposes an API before designing anything upstream.
- Which currency do 80% of your customers pay in, and where do you publish your rate?
- Do your customers reply on WhatsApp within an hour? If yes, that is your order channel; do not build a web shop first (why).
- What happens to orders taken during a power cut at the depot? See load-shedding-proof automation.
