Harare's medical district runs along the Avenues and Baines Avenue and out to the northern suburbs. The automation that matters is unglamorous: reminders, recalls and the pre-authorisation paperwork that stands between a patient and a medical-aid payment.
What is specific to Harare
The institutions. Parirenyatwa is the largest public hospital in Zimbabwe (with Mbuya Nehanda maternity and Sekuru Kaguvi eye units); Sally Mugabe Central is the second largest. The Avenues Clinic (established 1983, corner Baines Avenue and Mazowe Street) is the flagship of Medical Investments Ltd, which also runs St Clements and Montagu; St Anne's serves Avondale; the Trauma Centre and Borrowdale practices cover the northern suburbs.
Power and cold chain. During the 2024–25 Kariba drought Harare cuts ran from about 4am to 10pm. Every pharmacy fridge and every on-site server had to be on backup; the 2026 improvement (138 days without load shedding by May) has not changed the procurement habit.
Health data is sensitive personal data. The Cyber and Data Protection Act (2021) applies, with POTRAZ as the Data Protection Authority. Messaging a patient requires consent and a retention decision; drafting a pre-authorisation letter from a patient file requires knowing where that draft is processed.
